About the process

For more than 20 years I have dedicated myself to producing tapestries. The process starts with a drawing and often the drawing goes along with a photographic image. I try to create a conversation between figure and background, elevating the specific technical language of tapestry. Since my first experiences with the discontinuous weft on my vertical loom, I have used unconventional materials together with industrial yarns. This visual and tactile experience accentuates my haptic sense as well as that of the viewer. Daily weaving, combined with online contact with tapestry weavers from different nationalities, enables the exchange of experiences and serves as a motivation. Visits to museums and contemporary tapestry exhibitions (online and in person) are essential. Also, the specific bibliography helps in the construction of my imaginary museum, supporting my technical knowledge. Tapestry weaving is an activity that is built day by day.

About As Catarinas group

I have been teaching tapestry classes since 2003. In 2006 the group “As Catarinas” was created with students and ex-students of those courses. The group was created with the objective of expanding the technical expertise developed in the courses, improving the quality of tapestries suitable for participation in exhibitions. Currently, “As Catarinas” only maintain contact online, which does not hinder a dynamic conversation and many exchanges of experiences. As the creator and coordinator of the group, I feel very proud and grateful for the participation of each member.
